Bryan Mercer Owner/Teacher
Bryan Mercer, co-owner and teacher at the Bonsai Learning Center, discovered bonsai while traveling in Japan. Captivated by the beauty and artistry of the trees he encountered, he returned home and enrolled in a beginner class—sparking a passion that has never wavered. Since then, Bryan has visited Japan with a deeper understanding of bonsai, an experience that further fueled his commitment to elevating American bonsai practice. Known for his approachable and encouraging teaching style, Bryan invites each student to find their own path in bonsai—whether by following tradition or by experimenting with new ideas. He believes bonsai should be a personal journey, one that blends horticulture, art, and individual expression.
Brad Russell Owner/Teacher
Brad Russell, bonsai professional and co-owner of the Bonsai Learning Center, first encountered bonsai through his work in landscaping. His teacher and mentor, Randy Clark—the Center’s original owner—inspired Brad to pursue a deeper understanding of both the aesthetics and horticulture of bonsai. After apprenticing under Randy for three years, Brad joined forces with Bryan Mercer to acquire the Center and continue its legacy. Today, Brad draws on his experiences working with renowned bonsai artists from around the world, sharing advanced techniques and insights with students and clients. Dedicated to both artistry and education, Brad helps guide students toward transforming ordinary plants into living works of art while fostering appreciation for the centuries-old traditions of bonsai.
