$65.00
Deepen your understanding of bonsai care with a focus on pest management, soil science, seasonal adjustments, and growth control. This workshop is the Level 2 workshop in a series of 4 and builds the horticultural knowledge needed for long-term tree health and development.
Description
Skill Level: Beginner to Advanced
Duration: 3 hours 10am to 1:00pm, class size is no more than 5
This level shifts from “how to own a bonsai” to “how to manage and develop a bonsai properly over time.”
This workshop is designed for students who are ready to deepen their understanding of the horticultural principles that support long-term bonsai health and development. Building on the foundation established in our Beginner Bonsai Class, this session focuses on the science behind proper care and how informed decisions impact the strength and longevity of your trees.
We will take an in-depth look at pest and fungal prevention, with an emphasis on proactive management strategies. Participants will learn how to identify common pests and diseases, understand treatment options, and develop a clear plan for responding to active infestations safely and effectively.
A major focus of this class is soil science. We will examine the role of individual soil components, discussing water retention, drainage, aeration, and particle size. Students will compare the advantages and disadvantages of commonly used materials and soil blends suited for different bonsai sizes and stages of development.
Seasonal care and growth management will also be covered in detail. Students will learn how care changes throughout the year, including watering adjustments, fertilization timing, dormancy considerations, and protection during extreme weather. We will discuss how to manage strong growth, reduce excessive vigor, and encourage healthy ramification through intentional horticultural practices.
This workshop is ideal for students who want to move beyond basic ownership and develop a deeper, more confident understanding of bonsai care.
